A statement signed by Umar Abdulkadir Agaie, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart now aligned with an ADC-led coalition, described the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) recent endorsement of Niger State Governor Muhammad Umair Bago for a second term as both premature and unnecessary.
Political Atmosphere and Electoral Procedures
Titled “Soul of Democracy,” the statement warned that the move is heating up the political atmosphere without justification. Umar argued that campaigning for a candidate only two years into a four‑year term undermines proper electoral procedure.
He emphasized that official nomination and campaign activities should begin only after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) publishes its election timetable and schedule. According to Umar, the law and party rules require that candidates be chosen by duly accredited delegates at ward, local government, state and national conventions.
