ESPN Cancels Spike Lee's Colin Kaepernick Documentary Series
ESPN has removed Spike Lee’s eight-episode documentary series about Colin Kaepernick from its release schedule and said it will not move forward with the project.
Spike Lee's Statement
Director Spike Lee told Reuters on Friday that the series “isn’t coming out,” adding that he is bound by a nondisclosure agreement and cannot elaborate further.
Background and Disputes
The decision follows years of reported creative disagreements between Lee and Kaepernick during the production. Those disputes ultimately prevented the series from being completed to the parties’ satisfaction.
ESPN's Official Comment
In a statement, ESPN characterized the outcome as a shared failure. The network said it, Kaepernick and Lee “collectively” agreed to stop work on the project because of creative differences, and the network expressed appreciation for the effort and collaboration that went into the production.
