European regulators have moved to prohibit trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), a photoinitiator used in some gel nail polishes, citing evidence of reproductive toxicity from animal studies. TPO enables gel polishes to cure under UV or LED lights.
The ban covers the European Union; the substance remains permitted for use in the United States at this time.
Experts at The George Washington University are available to discuss what the decision means for consumers, potential health implications, and whether gel manicures remain safe. To arrange interviews, contact Katelyn Deckelbaum at [email protected].
Pooja Sodha is the director of the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology at GW’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Leonardo Tjahjono is an assistant professor of dermatology at the same school, with a clinical focus on cosmetic dermatology.
