Social Security’s 90th Anniversary Draws Community Rally
On Social Security’s 90th anniversary, union members, retirees and local residents gathered in communities across the country to demand stronger protections for the program.
Community Gathering in Wilkes-Barre
About 75 people assembled outside the Social Security Administration Direct Operations Center (DOC) on Baltimore Drive in Wilkes-Barre, part of more than 40 coordinated events organized by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) and allied groups.
Union Leaders Speak Out
AFGE President Everett Kelley said the milestone should have been a celebration but instead became a day to warn about what he described as an unprecedented assault on Social Security by the Trump administration. He vowed union resistance to any moves that would weaken the program.
Calls for Improved Service and Staffing
Speakers called for a fully staffed Social Security Administration to restore timely service and ensure recipients receive benefits when due. Rally organizers said staffing cuts have strained operations and harmed customer service for millions who rely on the program.
