Gen V S2E5 Review: 'The Kids Are Not All Right' — Marie's Resurrection Redraws the Battleground

Episode five of Gen V’s second season, “The Kids Are Not All Right,” reframes much of what we thought we knew about Elmira and the forces operating there.

What initially presents as a detention center increasingly reads like a research facility. Flashbacks and new revelations establish Elmira as a place engineered to manipulate Marie and others, not simply punish them.

Susan Heyward returns as Sister Sage, whose involvement confirms deeper, long-term schemes. Alongside Cipher, she appears to be executing a plan that far surpasses what the students anticipated.

Cipher’s position feels less untouchable than before. The episode hints that the figure in the chamber may not be who we expect, and Cipher’s fear when Marie’s power escalates suggests he’s been calculating risks he may no longer control.

Marie’s abilities take a dramatic turn in this chapter: she resurrects her sister. The sequence is both moving and unsettling, implying that her power exacts a heavy price—potentially drawing life from others or even from herself.

That awakening explains Cipher’s obsession and Sister Sage’s encouragement to push Marie further. They want Annabeth restored, and they are willing to

manipulate anyone to that end.

Jordan’s role is increasingly fraught. He may be a pawn in Cipher and Sage’s machinations, and the episode leaves open the terrifying possibility that he could be harmed as stakes rise.

Character dynamics outside the Elmira intrigue provide quieter counterpoints. Sam’s trip home offers grounding perspective and clarity about his feelings; he’s not yet ready to reconcile with Emma. Meanwhile, Greg and Emma’s pairing gains traction onscreen.

Cate’s choices this season remain divisive. The episode adds nuance to her motivations, showing she’s capable of desperate acts under pressure. I’m not ready to forgive her betrayal, but her arc hints at untapped powers and potential growth.

Most consequential is the implication that Marie could challenge Homelander. If resurrection is now within her arsenal, she becomes the most valuable—and perilous—supe in the universe. That shift promises major ramifications for the broader Boys-verse.

This installment sets up a tense, high-stakes remainder of the season. Marie’s newfound capability raises moral and tactical questions that will reverberate well beyond Elmira.

New episodes of Gen V stream Wednesdays on Prime Video. Share your thoughts below: did S2E5 change your view of Marie, Cipher, or Elmira’s purpose?
