GM Curtails Bolt and Cadillac EV Output Following End of $7,500 Tax Credit

General Motors will begin building the Chevrolet Bolt at its Kansas plant in December on a single production shift, after shelving earlier plans for a two-shift operation amid unpredictable demand.

The move comes as the $7,500 federal consumer tax credit for EV purchases — introduced under the Biden administration and since rescinded by President Trump and Republican lawmakers — has been eliminated. GM said the loss of that incentive could depress EV sales, prompting the automaker to trim production of the Bolt and two Cadillac electric models while it gauges consumer response.

A company spokesperson said GM is proactively adjusting manufacturing levels in anticipation of slower growth in the EV market and shifting buyer preferences.

GM will also schedule downtime at its Spring Hill, Tennessee, assembly plant, where it builds the Cadillac Lyriq and Vistiq alongside conventional gasoline SUVs.
