This installment of “Every Episode, Every Rating” tracks Home Economics’ Nielsen performance across its broadcast life, focusing on Adults 18–49 results. The analysis highlights where the sitcom held steady and where it slipped in ABC’s comedy lineup.
Background and Cast
Launched amid a thinning ABC comedy slate in 2021, Home Economics arrived as the network’s attempt to fill gaps left by established hits. The single-camera sitcom followed three siblings across different income levels, led by Topher Grace as middle-class Tom, Caitlin McGee as lower-income Sarah, and Jimmy Tatro as affluent Connor. Though well-reviewed by some, the show never reached the cultural dominance of a Modern Family.
Spring 2021 Ratings
The series debuted with a respectable 0.56 rating in the 8:30 p.m. slot, trailing its Goldbergs lead-in (0.65) and its Conners lead-out (0.66). That initial figure proved to be its peak. Week two slid to 0.47, and by late April it had fallen to 0.40. A modest improvement to 0.45 in early May helped secure a renewal, even as the series remained far from a breakout.
