Two leading pro-Israel House Democrats cautioned at an American Jewish Committee event that actions which preclude a two‑state outcome could imperil the Abraham Accords.
Rep. Brad Schneider (D‑Ill.), co‑chair of the House Abraham Accords Caucus, said he remains alarmed by renewed discussion in Israel about annexing parts of the West Bank. He noted Israel had paused such moves when it struck the Accords with the United Arab Emirates and said UAE officials have warned that annexation would likely fracture the agreement beyond repair.
Schneider also criticized efforts by some European countries to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state before foundational state-building steps are in place. He argued that elections, functioning institutions and unified security control are prerequisites and warned that early recognition could be perceived as rewarding the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas, creating a harmful political dynamic.
The congressman urged stronger U.S. leadership to marginalize extremists and maximalists on both sides and to promote pragmatic paths forward.
