The evacuation mandate covers Hurricane Evacuation Zone A on Hatteras Island and affects seven communities: Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. Officials said the action follows urgent briefings that highlighted the heightened risk to these low-lying, exposed settlements.
Community Vulnerabilities
Rodanthe, at the island’s northern end, is prone to overwash during major storms. Waves is vulnerable because of its low elevation and proximity to both the ocean and the sound. Salvo has seen significant shoreline erosion in recent years, increasing its exposure.
