Jessica Simpson marks eight years sober and says faith replaced fear

Jessica Simpson marked eight years of sobriety on Sunday with a candid Instagram post and a selfie, reflecting on how getting sober reshaped her life.

The 45-year-old singer wrote that eight years ago she decided to confront and release the patterns that were holding her back. She said alcohol had dulled her instincts, stalled her ambitions and fed a fear of complacency. Now, Simpson added, she feels clear and guided by faith — a choice she described as choosing faith over fear and finding strength through surrender.

Simpson, who recently announced her separation from Eric Johnson, told People that sobriety has also improved her songwriting. She said her drinking intensified when she began writing music in 2016, which sent her to dark places and encouraged self-pity. She added that alcohol had deceived her into thinking it made her braver.

The post follows Simpson’s recent launch of a lingerie collection sold through Walmart. Announcing the line on Instagram, she said lingerie gives her a private boost of confidence and described the range as “the poetry of my wardrobe.”

Simpson has also been open about past struggles in her memoir, Open Book. She revealed that, at 17, a

record label urged her to lose 15 pounds, which led to an addiction to diet pills. In a separate Instagram post from April 2022, she recalled cycling through large weight fluctuations and celebrated a personal milestone of wearing a bikini again after hard work and self-love.

Her fitness routine emphasizes sustainable habits. Trainer Harley Pasternak has said Simpson aims for at least 6,000 steps a day as a social activity with her children, gradually increasing to around 14,000 steps. She also undertakes three 45-minute workouts per week. Pasternak recommends three balanced, protein-focused meals and two snacks daily, and he cautions against extreme diets or radical exercise plans in favor of lasting change.
