Jim Cramer says he needed round-the-clock security after 2021 GameStop surge

Mad Money host Jim Cramer told Bloomberg’s Odd Lots podcast that he advised investors to sell when GameStop surged to about $400 a share in 2021. He said that after delivering that message he required round-the-clock security.

Cramer framed his counsel on CNBC’s Squawk on the Street as a caution to lock in gains. He urged viewers to “take the home run” rather than chase an even bigger payoff, saying that once you’ve won, it’s sensible to step away.

His warning proved prescient. The feverish rallies that drove GameStop and other meme stocks higher eventually subsided, and GameStop’s share price later fell back toward prior levels. The stock trades near $27 a share today.

Keith “Roaring Kitty” Gill briefly returned in 2024 and triggered a short-lived jump in GameStop shares, but that momentum faded quickly.

Looking back, 2021 remains a remarkable moment in markets — full of new slang like diamond hands and viral traders. My wife and I even profited modestly from AMC during that period.

On the business side, GameStop has struggled to find a sustainable path amid digital game distribution, though it has seen some growth in collectibles. I often poke fun at the chain, but I don’t

want to see it vanish. Store closures and job losses hit frontline employees hardest and affect local communities.
