Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban reportedly lived largely separate lives for up to three years before Kidman filed for divorce, according to court records and sources.
Court filings in Nashville show the Oscar-winning actor, 58, formally submitted for divorce this week, citing irreconcilable differences. The pair had been married for 19 years.
Friends say conflicting professional schedules drove the distance. Kidman’s back-to-back film commitments often kept her on set for long stretches, while the 57-year-old country star spent extended periods touring internationally.
A source told RadarOnline.com that the couple’s relationship had been worn down by prolonged absences. They described their interactions in recent years as infrequent and more like brief check-ins than a conventional marriage.
People close to the pair say Urban privately ended the relationship about six months ago. Those sources add Kidman was surprised by the decision after years of supporting him through public struggles with addiction.
The couple share daughters Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14. Their parenting plan submitted with the court names Kidman as the primary residential parent. The filings state neither
party will pay child or spousal support, and both will retain their own assets and royalty streams.
Urban has been open in the past about the risk of relapse. In 2022 he warned that a return to drinking could jeopardize his marriage, and friends say that ongoing concerns about his sobriety weighed heavily on Kidman.
Insiders say the emotional labor of monitoring his recovery took a toll. One source described Kidman as constantly vigilant about his drinking, a responsibility that added strain to both partners.
The couple’s work commitments further limited time together. A source noted that communication had increasingly been reduced to phone calls during their busiest periods.
Kidman’s 2024 role in the erotic thriller Babygirl is said to have been particularly demanding, leaving her physically and emotionally drained and adding pressure to an already fragile marriage.
In public appearances, the two were last seen together in June at a FIFA Club World Cup match in Nashville. Urban purchased a Nashville property earlier this year, and friends say much of his contact with Kidman had become sporadic.
Speculation in Nashville has linked Urban to another woman in the music industry, but no confirmation has emerged. Those close to Kidman say talk of him moving on has been painful for her.
The couple’s combined fortune is estimated at roughly $300 million, with real estate holdings in Sydney, Beverly Hills, Manhattan and Nashville. Sources say financial details are still being worked out.
Before his marriage to Urban, Kidman was married to Tom Cruise for 11 years; they adopted two children together before divorcing in 2001.
