Las Vegas City Council Approves Housing Development
A Review-Journal story reported that the Las Vegas City Council approved an agreement to acquire 940 acres for a housing development planned to include roughly 6,000 units in the northwest valley.
Water Consumption Implications of New Housing
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates an average household consumes about 300 gallons daily, roughly 100,000 gallons per year. By that measure, 6,000 new homes would add about 600 million gallons of water demand every year.
Urgency for Regional Water Planning
This projection underscores the urgency for local officials, the state of Nevada and neighboring states to confront the shrinking Colorado River supply. If Lake Mead continues to decline, we need clear plans for how the region will cope when the reservoir can no longer support added demand.
