Water Scarcity Challenges in a Remote Afghan Village
Masooma Darweshi, a Hazara woman from a remote area of Afghanistan, says there is not enough water for daily washing or taking a shower.
Journey to Collect Water
Darweshi described how women in her village strap yellow plastic jerry cans to donkeys and descend a dusty canyon each day to collect whatever water they can carry. The journey is long and the supply small, leaving many households without enough water for basic hygiene.
Impact on Women and Communities
Local women say they shoulder the main burden of fetching water, a task that reduces time for other work and heightens health and dignity concerns. The scarcity also worsens during dry spells and places added strain on already vulnerable communities.
