Marietta-based Oklahoma Jail and Prison Ministries Focuses on Reaching Marginalized Individuals
MARIETTA, Okla. — Oklahoma Jail and Prison Ministries (OJPM) is a donation-supported nonprofit focused on reaching people who many in society have written off.
Chaplain Sharen Hale’s Commitment to Ministry Behind Bars
Chaplain Sharen Hale left a church pulpit to work inside jails and prisons, driven by what she calls a deep concern for those who have no one to turn to. She has spent 25 years in ministry and was asked in 2018 to serve as the chaplain at the Love County justice center.
Transforming Society Through Service
Christopher Hendrix, who once was on the other side of the bars, now serves as OJPM’s executive chaplain. He says change in society begins with individuals willing to serve those most marginalized.
OJPM’s Outreach and Spiritual Support
Chaplains with OJPM regularly enter correctional facilities to offer counseling, spiritual care and practical support. Their work, leaders say, focuses on repairing broken lives and restoring hope beyond the barbed wire.
