Tennessee Education Lottery Names Wendy Hendrix Educator of the Week
Hendrix teaches kindergarten at Parsons Elementary School and says her decision to become a teacher came from a love of children and a belief that every child can learn, even if they need different supports.
Most Rewarding Moments
She cites the moments when students finally understand a concept as the most rewarding part of her work. Hendrix says those “light-bulb” expressions—when a child realizes they’ve learned something—are unforgettable.
Creative Teaching Techniques
Her classroom often uses creative, hands-on techniques. Hendrix recalls using green eggs and ham to help a child learn the letter E. While enjoying the snack, the student exclaimed, “I love green eggs,” and then correctly identified the initial sound, opening the door to reading words with that letter.
Career and Pride
Hendrix has served at Parsons Elementary for 29 years. Watching former students grow and succeed is a source of pride and bittersweet emotion for her.
