Time for a fall closet refresh
I recently audited my staples and removed seven basics that no longer felt current, replacing them with sleeker, more versatile alternatives.
A note on taste
I don’t believe anyone must abandon pieces they love. Fashion cycles quickly, and personal style matters most. As a fashion editor, I aim to point out which wardrobe basics feel dated now and which options read as fresher for 2025.
Removed: Cargo joggers
These sporty, pocket-heavy joggers felt passé to me and no longer fit the elevated everyday look I prefer.
Kept: Wide-leg pull-on pants
Comfortable and adaptable, wide-leg pull-on styles work with a range of fabrics—from linen to satin—and can be dressed up or down. Examples: J.Crew Cosmo, Reformation Olina, H&M wide-cut pull-ons.
Removed: Distressed jeans
Ripped and heavily frayed denim reads casual in a way that often dates an outfit.
Kept: Dark-wash denim
Inky, deep-blue jeans instantly elevate a look and feel more polished. Think Levi’s 501, Madewell vintage flares, or Citizens of Humanity relaxed fits.
