Rare Bull Moose Euthanized in New York

A rare bull moose that drew visitors across New York State has been euthanized after months of observation and declining health. New York is home to roughly 600 wild moose, making sightings uncommon and the animal a sustained attraction this summer.

Trail Closure and Investigation

The moose repeatedly remained on a trail in the Adirondacks, prompting the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to close the route several weeks ago. The closure remains in effect while officials continue their investigation, the Adirondack Explorer reported.

Monitoring and Decline

Wildlife veterinarians and DEC biologists monitored the animal with trail cameras and in-person checks. Over time the moose became noticeably emaciated and unresponsive to human presence, leading experts to conclude it was likely ill and in distress.

Euthanasia and Next Steps

After months of monitoring, DEC personnel euthanized the bull moose on Goodman Mountain. A necropsy will be conducted to help determine the cause of its deteriorating condition and atypical behavior.
