DC's Televised Landscape Shifts Following The Sandman's Conclusion
DC's televised landscape has shifted again as The Sandman concluded its run, becoming the final DC Entertainment series developed independently of James Gunn.
Release of The Sandman Season 2
Netflix released the second half of The Sandman Season 2 on July 24, 2025, concluding the show’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s mythic saga. The series, which began on the streamer in August 2022, was developed by Gaiman alongside David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg.
Unique Position of The Sandman in DC Mythos
The Sandman always stood apart from the larger DC mythos, with no meaningful ties to other DC projects. Its July 2025 finale therefore closes a distinctive chapter of DC television that existed outside the newly restructured DC Universe.
Leadership and New Direction Under James Gunn and Peter Safran
James Gunn and Peter Safran assumed leadership of DC Studios nearly three years ago and are now steering a unified DCU slate. Many future projects are being planned or have already started rolling out under their oversight.
