A Sherman mother and her children are on the verge of a fresh start as a Habitat for Humanity home takes shape in their neighborhood.

Volunteers and construction crews raised the walls and opened a new doorway Friday for Clair Jenkins, whose new house represents more than a floor and four walls. For Jenkins, the structure symbolizes a chance for her family to rebuild their lives.

Jenkins' Journey and Gratitude

"I struggled with homelessness for 15 years,” Jenkins said. “My prayer was to be stable, and God has given me a home."

Habitat for Humanity's Role and Jenkins' Involvement

The Grayson County chapter of Habitat for Humanity constructs homes for local families in need with assistance from volunteers across the Texoma region. Jenkins spent two years volunteering with the organization before being selected as a homeowner.

Lessons Learned and Future Plans

"Volunteering taught me a lot — not just the technical skills of building a house, but lessons about how to live my life," she said.
