17-year-old placed on electronic monitoring in Sarah Doxey fatal hit-and-run; trial set for September

UPDATE — Aug. 18, 5:20 p.m.

Julie Humphreys of the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the 17-year-old accused in the death of Sarah Doxey has been placed on electronic monitoring. The change follows a defense motion filed Aug. 13.

Humphreys said the teen is technically “released” but remains effectively confined by a 24/7 ankle monitor and limits on where he may go. Attorney Morgan Maxey told reporters Friday that the youth was scheduled to transition to the monitoring system over the weekend. Under those terms he may still attend school or work.

SpoKane — The teen appeared at a pretrial hearing where lawyers discussed next steps.

Defense counsel asked for more time to prepare, and prosecutors agreed, citing outstanding lab results and additional evidence still being processed by the Washington State Patrol.

Because investigators are still collecting and analyzing evidence, prosecutors said moving to trial immediately is not possible. The court set a new pretrial date for Aug. 27 and scheduled the trial to begin Sept. 8.
