U.S. Intercepts Drug-Smuggling Vessel in the Eastern Pacific
On August 11, U.S. Navy and Coast Guard personnel intercepted a vessel in the Eastern Pacific and seized more than 1,296 pounds of cocaine.
Operation Details
The operation involved Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment 105 embarked on the USS Sampson, an Arleigh Burke–class guided-missile destroyer conducting counter-narcotics patrols in a known trafficking corridor.
Suspicious Vessel Identification
Crew members identified a suspicious boat carrying numerous fuel drums and loosely secured cargo, which prompted further action. Commanders authorized engagement after observing behavior consistent with smuggling activity.
Approach and Engagement
An MH-60R Sea Hawk from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 49 and a rigid-hull inflatable boat were launched to approach the suspect vessel. Those aboard attempted to discard packages overboard to avoid detection.
After warning shots failed to stop the craft, crews employed disabling fire to halt its movement. No injuries were reported.
